I'm looking for a song I learned in grade school in the 1970s about a family that raises a turkey for Thanksgiving, but then doesn't have the heart to kill him. I'm looking mainly for the lyrics, but I'd love to know the composer's name and have the sheet music! Part of the lyrics go:

"The pudding's cooking in the pot.
It's made with plum and apricot,
But everything seems absurd.
No one can kill the bird.
We all have grown attached to him,
And on this holiday,
I left the door unlatched for him
So he could get away."

as a vegetarian i certainly support this tune!!

i'm rootin' for the bird i hope he makes a clean get away!!

there was a characture in the fat freddie and mr. natural
comics whose line was "..the day i set my chickens free..."

i hop;e you find this tune i would love to play it too...

I think it starts like this...

The carving knife is sharp and keen,

Novelty Singer has the correct song. My school used to sing it every other year during our thanksgiving program. We had actions to the lyrics and everything. Our whole school would come together (its an all girls school in Ohio) and between "Over the River and Through the Woods" and this song, they make my thanksgiving officially begin. To me it is the Thanksgiving song (sorry Adam Sandler)
